The Ghorepani trek:
Still Nepal’s best and most favorite short trek, the Ghorepani trek, or Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is your best bet to see the Himalayas in short and easy trek. The main highlight of the trek is Poon Hill, a hillside view point at a height of 3,210m/10,532ft.
Bundled in a standard trekking package of 9 days with all transportation included, the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is suitable for young and old and for those with limited trekking experience. It all starts with a short drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the entry point of most treks south of the Annapurna Himalayas. The first day of trekking is quite relaxed and perfect to get accustomed to the Himalayan trails. Passing by Tikhedungha the first day we’ll end at the village of Ulleri (1,960m/6,431ft). Laying just below Ghorepani, the second day will be the hardest as you’ll have to climb up over 3,000 big stone steps to reach the village at 2,880m/9,449ft! While this day might be tougher, it is also quite rewarding as the higher you reach the more the views clear up. Reaching Ghorepani’s stone arch gate is a relief and entering the village gives a great sense of accomplishment. But the best part of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek comes tomorrow early morning! After a very early wake-up call a short hike takes you up to Poon Hill, just in time to see the sunrise over the mighty Annapurna Himalayas and its neighbors. Expect to see some of the best views of Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,795ft), Mt Annapurna I (East) (8,026m/26,332ft), Mt Annapurna South (7,219m/23,684ft), and Mt Nilgiri (7,061m/23,166ft)! After enjoying the views the trek goes further east towards Tadapani village and lastly Ghandruk, the biggest Gurung village of the area. Here at the village you can learn more about the unique culture of the Gurungs by visiting the local Gurung museum!
The Ghorepani trek highlights are:
Nepal’s most popular short trek
Suitable for all ages due to its easy access and short duration
Experience different landscapes from farm fields to high jungle mountains

The Langtang Region:
Just north of Kathmandu, and touching the Tibetan border is the Langtang region. As one of Nepal’s best trekking regions the Langtang Valley has 3 popular trekking routes. 2 of them we have included in the 20 top ranked treks in Nepal. They are the famous Langtang Valley and the Langtang Gosaikunda treks.
The entire Langtang Valley is like a grassy plain filled with hills and mountains. Despite the 2015 earthquake the valley is been rebuild and the locals are receiving trekkers again. A big part of the valley is inhabited by the strong and hospitable Tamang people, who have been living here since centuries! There are quite a few prominent landmarks in this region. Lake Gosaikunda at a height of 4,380m/14,370ft is where according to legend the Hindu god Shiva made he’s residence. The Kyanjin Gompa (3,830m/12,566ft) serves as an important pilgrimage site and produces sublime yak cheese, and both peaks of Kyanjin Ri (4,773m/15,528ft) and Tserko Ri 4,984m/16,352ft offer amazing views of the surrounding Himalayas! You can see some incredible Himalayan mountains during your time in the Langtang Valley. The region also has its own above 6,000m/19,685ft mountains and peaks. Of course you’ll be able to see many more mountain ranges such as the Ganesh Himal, Mt Manaslu and the Rolwaling Himal. Besides the views of mountains and peaks, the Langtang Valley is also home to quite a number of flora and fauna. The entire area is classified into a national park, called the Langtang National Park to help preserve the species that live here. The endangered red panda and snow leopard both have their homes here, as well as black bears and the Assam Macaque monkeys have families residing within the National Park. The forests consist mostly out of pine and rhododendron offering a great scenic view during the spring season.
Trek in the Langtang region of Nepal, just a short distance from Kathmandu, and a great cultural experience as well. See incredible views of high altitude mountains and trek through some of the best uncrowded trails in Nepal!

To make the trek complete, a day hike up to Tserko Ri also spelled as Cherko Ri (4,984m/16,352ft) is planned. Just imagine the views from up there!
Due to its short distance to Kathmandu, you’ll find that with this trek you won’t have to waste any precious days traveling. It’s a scenic drive to Syabrubesi (1,503m/4,931ft) village taking about 7 hours. This village is the entry point for most treks in the Langtang Valley. And is also where we’ll start the incredible Langtang Valley trek. The first destination is the famous Lama Hotel. Following a great part of the Langtang Khola or Langtang River we reach the rebuild Langtang village (3,430m/11,253ft). Due to the 2015 earthquake the entire village was wiped from the map, but has been fully rebuild. By choosing to stay here we’ll also help out the locals financially providing funds for further development and rebuilding the village. From here on it’s a straight shot up to the famous Kyanjin Gompa Monastery. Well known for its production of delicious yak cheese it’s only natural to sample a few pieces! The monastery has a village build surrounded by mountains. This alone offers some great photo/filming opportunities. We’ll stay one day here and hold a hike up to the legendary Tserko Ri or Cherko Ri (4,984m/16,352ft)! Be prepared to see some incredible 360 panoramic views of the Himalayas. The Langtang Gosaikunda trek:
Following mostly the same route as the Langtang Valley trek, the Langtang Gosaikunda trek goes a bit further up to the holy lake of Gosaikunda. With more incredible views, and a more adventurous trail this trek in Nepal is quickly becoming popular not only amongst tourists but for Nepalese as well.
At the Lake of Gosaikunda it is said that the Hindu God Shiva made one of he’s residences, and as so the lake was proclaimed as a holy site. During the Hindu festival of Janai Purnima many Hindus flock here to pay tribute and offer prayers to their main deity Shiva. Back to the trek, following the same route up to the Kyanjin Gompa, during the extra day you now also have the option to climb Kyanjin Ri (4,773m/15,528ft) instead of Tserko (Cherko) Ri (4,984m/16,352ft) for a different experience. Being a bit shorter than Tserko (Cherko) Ri, Kyanjin Ri offers equally stunning views! Heading back down to the Lama Hotel, here is where the Langtang Gosaikunda trek differs from the traditional Langtang Valley trek. From here the trek heads to the ridge Tamang village of Thulo Syabru. It’s a steep climb, but with spectacular views from the village’s ridge it’s absolutely worth it! Heading on the trail goes steeper upwards through lush oak and rhododendron forests up to the Shin Gompa (3,300m/10,827ft). Spending the afternoon visiting the monastery and relaxing while enjoying the views is just a perfect way to end the day. It’s time to head for the three Gosaikunda Lakes! The trail continues on through dense forests until reaching Lauribinak (3,660m/12,008ft). While we won’t be overnighting here, we’ll enjoy incredible views of both the Ganesh and Langtang Himalayas as well as a part of the popular Annapurna Mountain Range! Heading on we reach at Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m/14,370ft). The three lakes fill each other from the glacial waters and at the top lake, Lake Gosaikunda is where we’ll spend the night. Having reached here gives a great sense of accomplishment and you can just feel the spirituality as you rest by the lake. It’s time to head on our next destination is the village of Ghopte at 3,530m/11,581ft. But before we reach here we’ll have to climb up to the highest part of the Langtang Gosaikunda trek, and that is to cross the Laurebina La Pass at 4,610m/15,125ft! We’ll of course stop to see those incredible views from atop the pass as well as enjoying the colorful prayer flags. After reaching Ghopte it’s mostly downhill passing by and overnighting at Maghingoth, Kutumsang, and lastly Chisopani. From there on it’s a short hike downhill to Sundarijal and a short drive back to Kathmandu.

Off the beaten path treks:
Having listed out 16 out of the 20 top ranked treks in Nepal according to trekking region we kept the last 4 separate. While these treks don’t belong to a single region they are considered as off the beaten path treks and promise a unique adventure! These 4 treks are not necessarily the most difficult but hold a special place and have less crowded trails than more popular treks.
Trekking off the beaten path doesn’t mean you’ll be stranded in the wilderness. It’s more taking unconventional routes through less developed trails and paths. Most villages during these off the beaten path treks are quite rural and have little facilities. This alone makes it worth visiting as not only do we help them economically by purchasing goods from them but also adds up to your Himalayan experience. Some of these treks require camping instead of overnighting at a teahouse or guesthouse. Nevertheless, these off the beaten path treks offer you a unique adventure through the Nepalese Himalayas and should be done at least once if you’re looking for a real Himalayan trip!
As most treks in Nepal these off the beaten path treks are best done during either the spring of fall/autumn seasons to get the best overall trekking experience. As most of these treks are in a restricted zone you’ll need a special permit as well as a partner for trekking as solo trekking is not allowed. Without further into here are the last 4 treks of the 20 top treks in Nepal according to Malung Treks & Expedition’s
The Upper Dolpo trek:
Setting place on the old salt trade route between Nepal and Tibet the Upper Dolpo trek is truly one of the best off the beaten path treks! Follow an old route through a Buddhist Tibetan influenced region up to the famous Shey Phoksundo Lake (3,589m/11,775ft), and visit the legendary Shey Gompa. It takes about three days to reach Shey Phoksundo Lake from Dunai, the starting point of the trek. First we’ll need to enter the Shey National Park. Shey stands for crystal, which is fitting for the views of the Crystal Mountain that you can see during the trek. The trail crosses various river streams and head up and down narrow paths filled with rocks and steep cliffs. The best part is entering Phoskundo from where you can see the blue lake stretching out below with the crystal mountain both in the backdrop and in the lake’s reflection! Of course we’ll be spending an extra day exploring around the lake. After our overnight at Ringmo village we can head down to the +900 year old Buddhist monastery of Tshowa, which is placed just a t the shores of Phoksundo. From here we get better access to the lake as well. For the further part of the incredible Upper Dolpo trek we’ll need to head for the mystical Shey Gompa or crystal monastery. The trek goes along the lake via narrow cliff paths and reaches further up until reaching Phoksundo Khola Camp. At a height of 3,750m/12,203ft, you can just imagine the views, especially of the lake below! We trek further and head for the high Nagdalo La Pass at 5,350m/17,553ft. We’ll need to cross here to reach Shey Gompa. Amidst crossing the mountain pass we’ll stop to wonder at the sight of the holy Mt Kailash where every year Hindus go for a sacred pilgrimage. Heading down now from the pass we reach Shey Gompa, a red colored monastery withstanding the elements and time for over 800 years! An extra day will be spend here for further exploration as well as resting. The next day we head for yet another monastery called the Namgung Gumpa. With amazing views of Tibet, Mt Kailash along the way as we cross the Shey La Pass at 5,010m/16,437ft! From the Namgung Gumpa it takes another two days of trekking through off the beaten path trails to reach the millennium old Yangjer Gumpa! We pay our respects here and spend the night as well. It’s another 10 days of trekking to reach back at Dunai, with incredible sights along the way as well as the occasional yak or donkey caravans.
