Starting of the expedition from Kathmandu:
Before leaving for the Himalayas we’ll need to be well equipped and prepared. Hence we’ll spend the first 3 days of the Mt Everest South Expedition in Kathmandu. This allows us to prepare and collect all required permits and hold an extensive safety briefing for during your expedition to the summit of Mt Everest. Kathmandu, known as the cultural hub of Nepal, is just filled with temples and Buddhist monasteries, we do suggest to spend some time sightseeing here before we depart. Furthmore, Thamel the main area of Kathmandu is full of trekking gear shops, restaurants and boutique shops. If you are missing a peace of gear or equipment, Thamel will have it!
The flight to Lukla and the trek to Base Camp:
Once we are fully prepared and set we fly from Kathmandu to Lukla airport. Also known as the world’s 38th highest airport only specialist pilots are allowed to fly here. The views during the flight are just amazing and you’ll quickly notice the white Himalayan peaks reaching above the clouds. After an adventurous landing at Lukla we embark the plane and meet up with our porter team. After a final gear and equipment check we head out for Phakding, our first mountain village. It is only after Phakding we’ll officially enter the Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo village. Following and crisscrossing the Dudh Khosi River we make our way further up towards Namche Bazaar. This is the last big settlement we’ll come across during the Mt Everest South Expedition, and also known as the biggest Sherpa settlement of Nepal. In order to get used to the higher elevations it’s very important that we hold an acclimatization day here. We’ll stock up on supplies and enjoy the views from Namche Bazaar. A day hike up to Khumjung will get us get prepared for tomorrow’s trek. Will spend another two days of trekking passing by Tengboche and reaching at Dingboche. Here we’ll hold our second acclimatization day in order to prevent acute mountain sickness. A day hike to the Nangkatshang Gompa will also help out a lot. It’s another two days of trekking that takes us to Gorakshep by passing Lobuche. Gorakshep is the last village before Everest Base Camp, and after checking in to the teahouse we hike straight for Base Camp. Malung Treks & Expedition’s team will spend the next few days setting up our camp at Everest Base Camp, while we overnight at Gorakshep. The next morning we hike up to Kala Pathar during the early hours. From here an incredible sunrise view over Mt Everest and its companion peaks can be seen. To some it is one of the most beautiful sunrise views in the entire world! Now it’s time to make our way to Everest base Camp and our set up camp.
Training at Everest Base Camp:
Before attempting to climb, we first need to get used to our climbing gear and get lessons in safety climbing and procedures. Being well prepared will only increase our chances for a successful summit! We’ll spend at least two days at Everest Base Camp acclimatizing and training. The Khumbu Glacier offers excellent training grounds and we’ll even attempt to reach Camp I and back to Base Camp. While we are busy training and get used to high altitudes (+5,000 meters) our team sets up our tents at Camp I in anticipation of our first climbing period. During our training our Malung Treks & Expedition’s Sherpa team will teach you the ins and outs of summiting Mt Everest and how to use your gear properly!
The climb for Everest summit:
In order to have a successful Mt Everest South Expedition we divide our climbing period in to 4 stages and at last our summit attempt. Climbing period 1 is straight forward. Our target, Camp I at 5,943m/19,500ft! Camp I or the Intermediate Camp is where we’ll make our first base on the slopes of Mt Everest’s south side. It’s very important that we do not stay overnight at higher elevations as the risk of getting AMS is no joke. Climbing period 2 takes us to Camp II at 6,400m/21,000ft. This Camp will be set up with large cooking tents and serve as an in-between base for the rest of the expedition to the summit of Mt Everest. Although reaching at Camp II we’ll head back to Camp I and spend the next day’s traveling between the two of them and acclimatizing. Naturally the weather will play a big role as well in how fast we can advance further up Mt Everest. Climbing period 3 is for most the toughest, from here on out we’ll need help from oxygen cylinders as we are headed for Camp III at 7,162m/23,500ft! Our team will have set up 3 to 4 person tents and we make practice runs back and forth to Camp I. After a couple of days climbing up and down the south side of Mt Everest we start climbing period 4. Camp IV or High Camp is located at an elevation of 8,016m/26,300ft! Our Sherpa team will be transporting our equipment from Camp II to here, while we make again practice runs. From High Camp we make for the South Col and back to get a feel for the last part of the Mt Everest South Expedition. After having been to all Camps and having made practice runs between them it’s time for your Mt Everest summit attempt! Depending on the conditions we’ll descend back to Base Camp and attempt a direct climb to the summit. After High camp we head up to the South Col and the famous Hillary Step. A further climb takes you to the top of the highest mountain in the world Mt Everest 8,749m/28,704ft. You made it! You are at the top of the world and got the ultimate bragging rights! After enjoying your summit, we’ll head back down to Base Camp.
